Before Installing KOReader on a Kindle: Match the Device, Firmware, and Package

The risky part of putting KOReader on a Kindle is often not the command you type. It is following a correct guide for the wrong device.

A Kindle model name is not enough. Before downloading anything, open Settings → Device Options → Device Info and record:

  • the first eight characters of the serial number;
  • the complete firmware version;
  • whether the Kindle can be registered;
  • whether it has lock-screen advertisements.

Enter those facts into the current KindleModding jailbreak wizard. Let the wizard select the route. Do not choose a jailbreak only because an old article says your firmware is “below” a particular version.

Keep three decisions separate

It helps to think of the setup as three different compatibility checks:

  1. Jailbreak: exact model, firmware, registration state, and sometimes ad state determine the route.
  2. Post-jailbreak launcher: current modern KindleModding instructions use KPM and Scriptlets. Older records may use MRPI and KUAL; the current guide describes KUAL as obsolete.
  3. KOReader build: Kindle downloads are not interchangeable. Use the package selected by the current installation guide rather than guessing from a filename.

For the current modern flow, KindleModding tells readers to reboot after jailbreaking, enable Wi-Fi, run ;kpm update, then install KOReader with ;kpm install koreader. Check the live KOReader instructions before acting, because this workflow can change.

Preserve a reproducible record

Once the compatibility route is known, keep a small record beside the files:

  • Kindle model and exact firmware;
  • guide URL and date checked;
  • downloaded release name and SHA-256 hash;
  • which files were copied and where;
  • the result of each on-device step;
  • a recovery note for anything that changes boot or launch behavior.

This turns “I think I installed the right package” into something you can inspect later. It also makes it obvious when a six-month-old tutorial should stay a historical record instead of becoming advice for a new device.

A data-capable USB cable matters too. Charging alone does not mean the Kindle storage is available. Confirm that the computer can actually see the device, copy only after that check, and safely eject before continuing on the Kindle.

A real Paperwhite 2 example

I keep the full notes from one Paperwhite 2 on firmware 5.12.2.2 in the open-source LazyingArt Kindle repository. They include package hashes, staging steps, observed results, and the unfinished on-device step.

That page is now labelled as a dated execution record. It is useful for understanding what was done on that Kindle; it is not a substitute for running today’s wizard on yours.
