Reading Clocking-in Day 9: 《外国散文精品鉴赏》 Reading Notes

Hans Christian Andersen’s prose Thorny Road of Honor shows us the history of some of the greatest people through a slide-like experience. Those honoured people have stories similar to fictional ones, except that they usually did not have the happy endings that fictional stories have. They struggled for happiness for the people and fought against dictators.

For starters, we saw Socrates mocked by the people, though he had protected them from thirty despots. Later, we saw seven Greek cities argue over the place of Homer’s birth. The ironic thing is that when he was alive, he roamed through those cities, worrying about tomorrow’s life. So many fighters received unfair treatment in their lifetimes. They were treated like madmen and locked in chains.

This is history. History shows us its truth and disgusting details. Moreover, it repeats again and again. Nevertheless, we need them. With their persistent struggle and fighting, we can come to an end with glory and happiness. They are the light on the thorny road. Let there be light!
