Independent reconstruction, September 2026: The 2019 source was a one-line study reminder. This edition rebuilds it as a self-contained lesson. It is not sponsored or endorsed by Rosetta Stone or LingQ.
The shortest useful contrast is:
- から marks a source or starting point: “from” or “starting at.”
- に appears with predicates that select a destination, target, recipient, or event time.
Particles depend on the predicate. English glosses are clues, not one-word definitions. This lesson covers case-particle から; it does not cover conjunctive から, meaning “because.”
Table of Contents
Scope and core contrast
| Role | Particle | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Place of origin | から | 東京から来ました。 | I came from Tokyo. |
| Starting time | から | 九時から勉強します。 | I will study from nine. |
| Destination | に | 学校に行きます。 | I go to school. |
| Event time | に | 七時に起きます。 | I wake up at seven. |
A useful combined sentence is:
家から学校に行きます。
I go from home to school.
Here, 家から is the starting point and 学校に is the destination selected by 行きます.
1. から marks a source or start
Use から to show where a movement, transfer, or time span begins:
- 東京から来ました。 — The movement begins in Tokyo.
- 九時から勉強します。 — The activity begins at nine.
- 先生から本をもらいました。 — The teacher is presented as the source of the book.
With もらう, a person who gives something may also be marked by に: 先生に本をもらいました. The choice is a construction with the predicate, so “giver always equals から” is not a safe general rule.
2. に follows what the predicate selects
に has several related roles, but the verb or predicate controls which one is available:
- 学校に行きます。 —
行くselects a destination. - 友だちに手紙を書きます。 — The friend is the target or recipient of the letter.
- 七時に起きます。 — Seven is the event’s clock time.
- 部屋に猫がいます。 —
いるlocates the cat’s existence in the room.
That is why translating に as a universal “to,” “at,” or “for” causes mistakes. First identify the predicate and the role it needs.
3. A range uses から…まで
To give both ends of a time or place range, pair the start marker から with the endpoint marker まで:
九時から十時まで会議があります。
There is a meeting from nine until ten.
Compare it with:
会議は十時に始まります。
The meeting starts at ten.
In the first sentence, ten is the end of a range and takes まで. In the second, ten is the specific time selected by 始まります and takes に. The earlier 九時から十時に会議があります is therefore not a good model for “from nine to ten.”
4. Not every time expression takes に
Exact clock times and dates commonly take に:
- 六時に起きます。
- 九月二日に出発します。
Relative or interrogative time words such as 今日, 明日, 昨日, and いつ normally do not:
- 明日、京都へ行きます。
- いつ帰りますか。
Weekdays may appear with or without に, depending on context: 月曜日(に)会いましょう.
5. Nearby particles: へ, で, and まで
Several particles can occur near the same nouns without being interchangeable:
| Particle | Main question here | Example |
|---|---|---|
| に | destination or selected point | 学校に行きます。 |
| へ | direction toward | 学校へ行きます。 |
| で | place where an action happens | 学校で勉強します。 |
| まで | endpoint or limit | 学校まで歩きます。 |
に and へ can overlap with motion verbs, but へ emphasizes direction. で marks the setting of an action, not the destination. まで marks how far or until when.
Practice
Fill each blank with から, に, まで, へ, or で. More than one answer is noted where natural.
- 毎朝、八時( )仕事を始めます。
- 家( )駅( )歩きます。
- 図書館( )日本語を勉強します。
- 会議は二時( )四時( )です。
- 明日( )大阪( )行きます。
Answers
に— eight is the event time selected by始めます.から/まで— the path runs from home as far as the station.で— the library is where the studying happens.から/まで— the meeting occupies a range.- no particle after
明日;にorへafter大阪— both can mark movement, with a different emphasis.
If an answer surprised you, return to the predicate: 始める, 歩く, 勉強する, and 行く do not all select the same role.
