PixInsight “Unlimited Trial” Correction: Lawful Evaluation, Licensing, and Migration

Archival correction (September 1, 2026): The 2019 post presented an “unlimited trial” of PixInsight 1.8. One archived screenshot showed a nonsensical negative-year trial expiry; another showed a local web service masquerading as the PixInsight domain. They are evidence of license-evasion infrastructure, not a legitimate trial, so both have been removed from the rendered article. This revision provides no patched binary, mirror, key, activation proxy, referral, or trial-extension trick.

What the official license currently allows

PixInsight’s current pages describe two routes, not an unlimited trial:

Route Official terms relevant to evaluation Boundary
Trial A full-featured, fully functional 45-day evaluation, without watermarks or disabled features; online license validation is required each time the application launches One machine at a time; truthful application data; the software cannot be used after expiry
Commercial A personal, non-transferable license; initial online activation, then no continuous connection is required for normal use Only the licensed person may use the copies; follow the EULA and official activation process
Additional evaluation need PixInsight says requests for another machine or a longer evaluation are considered case by case Ask PixInsight before the trial expires; approval is not guaranteed

The official trial page requires an actual name, address, email address, and traceable location, and says that hidden IP addresses, proxies, VPNs, disposable email addresses, and false data are not accepted. Changing the system clock, redirecting the vendor domain, running a local activation service, reusing someone else’s license data, or patching a binary does not create a valid extension.

After the evaluation period, the lawful choices are to buy a license, obtain a written exception from PixInsight, or stop using the application. A trial reactivation may move a valid trial to another supported machine, but the official FAQ says this does not extend the 45-day period.

Privacy and eligibility before requesting a trial

The PixInsight privacy policy says a trial request collects name, email, street address, city, country, postal code, and associated IP information. Purchase and forum use involve additional data. Read that policy before submitting anything, provide only truthful information through the official form, and do not publish approval emails, user identifiers, activation data, license files, account credentials, or screenshots containing them.

The commercial storefront and FAQ currently describe licenses for verified individuals, not companies, clubs, schools, universities, observatories, or other legal entities. If the intended user or payer is an organization, do not route the purchase through a personal identity as a workaround. Ask PixInsight for written guidance before procurement and preserve the response with the organization’s software records.

Plan a useful 45-day evaluation

An unrestricted feature set is valuable only if the evaluation answers a decision question. Prepare before requesting the clock to start.

1. Check compatibility first

The system requirements page was updated on May 13, 2026 and identifies PixInsight 1.9.4 Lockhart as the current version at that time. It lists:

  • Windows 11 as the supported Windows platform; Windows 10 may run but is not officially supported.
  • macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 15 Sequoia, with a native Apple Silicon build and a compatibility x64 build for Intel Macs.
  • 64-bit x86_64 Linux with current library and X11/XCB requirements; current Linux and Windows builds require AVX2 and FMA3 processor support.
  • substantial RAM and fast local storage recommendations that scale with image dimensions and frame count.

These facts will change. Check the live page against the exact computer, operating-system build, CPU instruction set, RAM, free fast-storage capacity, display configuration, and graphics driver before requesting a trial or buying a license. “Version 1.8 worked here” is not evidence that a current build is supported.

The same official page says current Windows installers are digitally signed and macOS packages are notarized. Obtain the installer only through PixInsight’s license-gated software distribution system and inspect the platform’s publisher verification. Do not substitute a mirror because an older operating system is no longer supported.

2. Choose representative data and success criteria

Use a small but representative project that includes the camera formats, calibration frames, mosaics, narrowband channels, image scale, and frame count typical of your work. Keep original acquisitions read-only and work from copies.

Write down what would justify purchase, such as:

  • calibration and registration completing without unexplained errors;
  • memory, temporary-storage, and processing time staying within available resources;
  • repeatable results from saved parameters on the same data;
  • acceptable handling of color management, metadata, masks, and output formats;
  • a realistic learning and documentation burden; and
  • successful exchange with the rest of your lawful workflow.

One attractive finished image is not enough to establish compatibility, reproducibility, or value.

3. Keep a reproducibility manifest

For every result used in the decision, record:

  • PixInsight core version and build;
  • module and script names, versions, and update-repository origins;
  • operating system, CPU architecture, RAM, and relevant storage layout;
  • hashes or stable identifiers for input lights, darks, flats, bias frames, masters, and catalogs;
  • process order and complete parameter values, including defaults that affect the output;
  • any manually drawn masks, selections, process icons, containers, or scripts needed to repeat the run;
  • output format, bit depth, color profile, naming rule, and validation measurements; and
  • the date and reason for every application, module, script, or catalog update.

PixInsight’s FAQ describes process instances as reusable, self-contained workflow objects. Save them where appropriate, but also export a human-readable manifest. A GUI workspace or project file alone may not explain third-party dependencies or changes between versions.

4. Evaluate updates and third-party components separately

Core software, standard modules, scripts, third-party repositories, catalogs, and learned/manual technique are different dependencies. Record which are official PixInsight components and which have their own authors and licenses. Test the baseline official installation before adding third-party repositories. Never assume a script remains compatible merely because it appears in an old tutorial.

When an update arrives during the evaluation, preserve the before/after version manifest and rerun the representative test. Do not silently mix outputs from different builds and call the workflow reproducible.

Purchase checklist

As of the review date, the official purchase page lists EUR 300 for non-EU individual users and applicable VAT for EU users. It also states that no refund is offered after a commercial licensee downloads the software and that its storefront is for individuals. Prices, taxes, payment routes, and terms can change, so verify the current checkout total rather than relying on this dated figure.

Before paying:

  • [ ] Complete the representative trial while it is valid; do not let sunk processing time force the decision.
  • [ ] Read the current EULA, refund statement, privacy policy, and version-update policy.
  • [ ] Confirm that the named licensee, payer, and intended user satisfy the storefront rules.
  • [ ] Confirm current OS/CPU/RAM/storage support on every intended machine.
  • [ ] Understand that the FAQ describes the license as personal and non-transferable, even though the licensed individual may use supported computers they own.
  • [ ] Confirm how the initial official activation will be completed and how license records will be stored securely.
  • [ ] Record the invoice, terms version or capture date, installer version, and official distribution URL without publishing credentials or activation material.
  • [ ] Treat future major-version pricing as unknown unless the current official terms state it; the FAQ does not promise a fixed PixInsight 2.x upgrade price.

No one outside the official seller needs your password, approval email, license file, user identifier, or activation data. A seller offering a shared account, preactivated package, “lifetime trial,” or remote activation service is not supplying the official personal license described above.

Migration checklist

Use this when moving from trial to commercial, to another computer or operating system, or away from PixInsight.

Before changing the environment

  • Preserve original sensor data and calibration frames independently of PixInsight.
  • Export the reproducibility manifest, process definitions, scripts you wrote, masks, output profiles, and a list of update repositories and third-party dependencies.
  • Save representative outputs and quantitative checks so the new environment can be compared.
  • Back up ordinary settings needed for the workflow, but keep license and account material in a separate protected location. Do not bundle it with a shareable project archive.
  • Check each third-party script/module license and obtain it again from its current official project source.

Build the new environment lawfully

  1. Use the current official installer available to the valid license account; verify the displayed publisher or notarization.
  2. Follow the platform-specific installation and activation instructions supplied by PixInsight. Do not copy steps from an old forum post or reuse expired trial data.
  3. Install the official baseline first, record its exact versions, and run the representative project.
  4. Add third-party repositories one at a time, recording the origin and version and retesting after each change.
  5. Compare outputs, warnings, performance, metadata, and numerical measurements. Do not assume byte-identical output across different core/module versions, operating systems, or dependencies.
  6. Keep the previous lawful environment only as long as the license permits and rollback is necessary. An expired trial must not be modified to keep it running.

If you decide not to buy PixInsight, finish exporting your own data and workflow documentation while the trial is valid, then stop using the expired application. Select another lawfully obtained tool, map each required processing stage, validate it on the same representative data, and document any algorithmic or metadata differences. No alternative should be called a one-to-one replacement without that test.

Go / No-Go boundary

Proceed with PixInsight only when all applicable statements are true:

  • [ ] I am using a valid official trial or commercial license in accordance with its terms.
  • [ ] My real identity, machine use, and purchaser type meet the official eligibility rules.
  • [ ] My current platform satisfies the live system requirements.
  • [ ] The installer came from the license-gated official distribution system and passed publisher verification.
  • [ ] My representative project met documented functional, performance, and reproducibility criteria.
  • [ ] I understand the current total price, tax, refund position, update scope, and personal/non-transferable boundary.
  • [ ] License credentials and personal data are stored separately from shareable astronomy projects.
  • [ ] No mirror, patch, clock/DNS redirection, local activation service, shared account, or third-party key is involved.

If any answer is no, choose No-Go: pause, ask PixInsight for written clarification, or migrate to another lawful workflow. Convenience does not convert an expired trial or unofficial activation into permission.
